From a functional standpoint, the lid of the toilet has become a traditional place to put tissues and other items. When interviewed, people commented on the usefulness of the tank as an additional shelf in the bathroom. To emphasize this design element, we provided a support brim around the circumference to help hold stored contents. This is not a completely original feature—in fact, it is decidedly retro—and it was a challenge to persuade American Standard of the validity of this retro tilt in a "modern" design. This, of course, was in 1995, before the incredible popularity of the redesigned Volkswagen Beetle and razor scooter—both retro designs. Using qualities that reference designs of yesteryear is a symptom of postmodernism. Postmodernism is a larger trend affecting how we perceive all that is created. Although "retro" is thought by many to be a passing trend, we recognize that pulling design attributes from the past was a established pre-twentieth century practice.
