Hergóm SA, a manufacturer of cast-iron products in Cantabria, Spain, was impressed with the decorative stoves that we had designed in the US and asked us to design a wood stove insert for the Southern European market. Wood stove inserts are casings that mount flush into existing walls and heat by venting warm air through ducts into the home. The project involved redesigning a particular type of insert that had significant space constraints and that had traceable heritage to Southern France and Northern Spain. For a number of years Hergóm had enjoyed market leadership in Spain. Their designs typically had clean and modern lines, but copies by competitors and cheap imitations were beginning to erode their market share. Hergóm, therefore, needed to reestablish itself as an industry leader in this type of functional furnishing.
