It is a challenge to design a product that people don't really like to think or talk about if they can help it. People don't like flushing toilets, they don't like cleaning them, or even sitting on them for that matter—essentially people don't like touching them at all! So, at Henninge, we began to look for ways to help people feel better about interacting with the product. First, it seemed wrong that people were expected to lift the seat and lid by inserting their fingers in the crevice between the seat and lid where it is impossible to visually gage the level of cleanliness. To address this problem, we designed special areas around the seat and lid—visual places that suggested that, "yes, it is ok to lift me here". The overall design we created has that "pretty bar of soap" aesthetic, an aesthetic that fits with bathroom decor. The flush handle is a minimal wire form that you tap, therefore limiting the amount of time you have to be handling the toilet's fixtures.
