Realizing that we needed to come to understand why certain products remain unchanged for such long periods of time, we began the project by researching the world of toilets. From there, we strategically moved forward with this foundation of information. Within the industry, the toilet is more commonly referred to as the water closet—and not without good reason. The term "water closet" implies a small room fitted with plumbing. And, in fact, toilets share their origins more with plumbing than they do with other pieces of furniture, products, or environments in a home. This explains why you'll find toilet seats in the plumbing section at the hardware store along with other pipes and fittings. Toilets are all standardized to fit certain dimensions so that their pieces can fit together easily, hence the name American Standard!
