Many
important criteria needed to be concurrently considered. Industrial designers
must know just enough about everything being considered in order to be able
to balance it all in a single concept. In this instance, regulatory issues
and infant safety concerns melded with the need for manufacturing efficiencies.
We developed a unique bed surface to accommodate infants from 6-20 months
using computerized geometry and anthropometric data. The resulting changing
table is smaller than many competitors, and yet feels larger for both the
infant and the parent. This is accomplished by the way the bed table nests
over the wall-mounting section making the bed the single largest component.
Most competitors do the inverse, and that means two large, expensive parts.
Nesting also allowed us to meet the American Disabilities Act requirement
of an overall depth of no more than four inches and still maintain the deepest
bed cavity in the industry, providing increased safety. |
