In designing the helmet, we used a combination of old and new tools. Highly detailed computer data of the head allowed us to design the shape of the interior and exterior shells to accurately match the human skull, which was necessary to achieve maximum comfort and safety. Sewn-liner prototypes were produced much the way sketches would be—by the designer's own hands. Because fit and feel are so important, we often worked in front of a mirror with actual production materials, first taping together combinations of fabric and then sewing several mock-ups to see what felt best. These liners were then used in conjunction with the computer-generated models and tested for comfort and fit. We feel it is important to mix design tools within the design process to insure an unbiased viewpoint of the problem.
