We
were asked by HearthStone to design a decorative gas insert to complement
their line of cast iron stoves. Inserts are a challenge because they typically
go into existing walls or fireplaces and must adapt to a variety of residential
environments. We wanted to create a look that was definitively American
with its own unique character. Traditionally, "the hearth" as
a concept holds as much visual importance as a glorious entryway or stairwell.
This justified giving the design a strong character as opposed to a watered-down
look in an attempt to satisfy all surroundings. In large part, its character
comes its focal point: the fire. Window shapes change yearly within the
industry from rectangles to variations on the bread oven. We aspired to
create something different, yet familiar at the same time. We discovered
a window profile that has wonderful historical roots in American federal
architecturea soft, round cap buttressed by two rectangular forms
on either side. |
