The final design we arrived at for Hearthstone is not a literal translation of a Federal style, but a subtle blend of styles that achieves an overall 1920s aura. Shown here is a photo of a hand-made model made of wood and plastic. Mixing styles can be a dangerous endeavor and difficult to pull off successfully, yet when all the elements are juggled in space together and expressed as a single entity, the designer can control and appropriately mix flavors from various genres. Arguably, there never are new styles but merely old cultural impressions—or reactions to these impressions—that are recycled and brought forth as new. Consequently, a successful new product is perhaps one that strikes a balance between appearing unique in character and yet feeling deeply familiar. This new line of stoves contains influences from the arts-and-crafts movement with a touch of European gothic, along with an applied Celtic pattern, all boxed into a Federal chassis!
