We were encouraged to explore numerous configurations for the binding. The only stipulation was that we maintain the predetermined heel-cup geometry that they found comfortable in their freestyle product. We rapidly generated designs that addressed a number of issues such as: boot integration, calf support, ingress/egress, material laminations, flex regions, webbed straps, alternative tightening systems, adjustable lateral flex, asymmetric support, quick release, forward lean, and overall style. Our philosophy was—and continues to be—that style is an integral component of engineering. The two can only be considered together. There is a powerful psychological influence that the visual impression of a product conveys. If well formulated, this impression tells the truth about a product and enhances its use. And because people recognize truth when they see it, a product can build a consumer alliance far more successfully than a thousand ad campaigns.
