Through our research, it quickly became apparent that modularity was an important feature that solved several objectives. The size and shape of the lunch carrier needed to meet the needs of the children using them, as well as the needs of their parents. Many kids live out of a backpack. The new design therefore had to "pack-up" and "pack-down" as food was purchased and consumed. Because many meals and snacks occur between lunch hours and during after-school activities, the carrier required additional function that allowed kids to eat while on the go. With regard to fashion and style, we studied the "chain-of-command" of influence among children from differing age groups to determine what were the most important features so that age-group priorities could be established. It was imperative that all products be easy to clean and dishwasher safe. Analyzing such a broad range of issues enabled us to generate clear and defined creative guidelines and goals as we refined the design.
