The
goal of the problem-solving process is to end up with the best solution.
Design begins with the creation of the process itself, each new challenge
requiring a different, yet unique, path. For Aladdin, we began by hosting
a series of special "play sessions" for kids moderated by a local
children's specialist. With open eyes and open ears, we observed and took
notes, listening to the ideas spilling forth from the kids. We began to
recognize reoccurring themes about their needs, expectations, and dreams.
We also interviewed parents, the customers who actually purchase the products,
and came to better understand their concerns with such issues as cleaning,
simplicity, durability, and backpackable functionality. To better comprehend
the full scope of the project's objectives, we choreographed "typical
day" scenarios with both the kids and parents to map out the conditions
that would ultimately influence important design criteria.
