We began the project by taking advantage of our "outsider" status. Over the years we've discovered that an outside perspective can be invaluable in evaluating a design in which so many different issues are at play—including cultural issues. As an outsider you can only be left with an overall impression from what you see, hear, and are told, and these impressions are then absorbed and expressed in the form of design drawings. We also studied trends and historical changes of the Mediterranean culture for which we were designing. It was instructive for us to learn that in this area of Europe the concept of a "hearth" was more readily associated with the kitchen than with the living room, as is the case in other cultures. Their stove inserts have gone more of the way of the cook stove, considered more as a modern appliance and less as a mantle or an old piece of furniture. So what was the correct direction to follow for a modern Spanish design?
